No, due to its hydrophobity.

Can a hydrophobic agent absorb the substances from the solution within the intestinal lumen?

Hydrophobic sorbent agents absorb effectively the substrates from water solutions. Their effect is due to dispersion forces.

Can Enterosgel induce the removal of mineral substances from the body?

No. Enterosgel does not absorb mineral substances, because the pore size of its organosilicone matrix provides the absorption of medium-size molecules solely. Such substances include most toxic agents and the substances which damage the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract.

Why Enterosgel absorb certain bacteria and does not absorb others? How does it recognize them?

Normal microbial flora is characterized by a high affinity to enterocyte receptors and is tightly attached to them. Pathogenic flora does not possess this property and uses other ways of binding to attach to the mucosal surface. Due to the electrostatic interaction with the surface of Enterosgel, the destruction of pathogenic bacteria starts before the contact with the mucosal surface, and components of the bacteria attach to Enterosgel.

How does Enterosgel cover the epithelial surface of intestinal mucosa without adhesion to it?

Enterosgel particles do not interact with the mucosal surface due to their hydrophobic properties.

What is the half-life of Enterosgel in the human body?

The drug is completely eliminated from the body within 7 to 8 hours.

Can Enterosgel be used after being frozen?

No. In the frozen state its structure is degraded, and the treatment properties of the drug are lost. After being thawed, the product has the following appearance in the tube: the container full of water, with the laid-down deposit in the form of fine white powder at the bottom.

Does the use of Enterosgel induce the necessity of nutritional supplements? What supplements are required?

Following the treatment with Enterosgel there is no necessity to use nutritional supplements, as this product does not result in the deficit of vitamins, minerals or other beneficial substances.

How does Enterosgel affect patients who use the long-acting medicinal products?

In case a prolonged release pharmaceutical form, which includes sorption material as a carrier, is used, the administration of Enterosgel is undesirable. In this case a competition between Enterosgel and the sorptive carrier of the drug substance may occur.

Should Enterosgel be used concomitantly with antibacterial agents? Which antibiotics are permitted?

Enterosgel may be used concomitantly with any antibiotics. However, a 2-hour gap should be maintained between the administration of Enterosgel and an antibacterial agent. In case a prolonged release antibiotic, which includes sorptive material as a carrier is used, the administration of Enterosgel is undesirable. In this case a competition between Enterosgel and the sorptive carrier of the antibiotic may occur.

Is Enterosgelˇs mechanism of action similar to that of Espumisan and Loperamide?

No. Enterosgel contributes to the decrease of gas production within the intestine and the cessation of diarrhoea, but, unlike Espumisan and Loperamide, it influences the cause of the disease, destroying and eliminating the pathogenic organisms responsible for diarrhoea, not only the symptoms of this disease.

In order to protect children during antibacterial treatment, the probiotics containing particular bacteria are used. These bacteria are missing in Enterosgel. How does this drug influence the recovery of bacterial intestinal flora?

The administration of Enterosgel is recommended immediately during antibacterial treatment. In this case the drug decreases the incidence of dysbiosis. Enterosgel cannot be compared to probiotics: contrary to probiotics, Enterosgel is not able to colonize the intestines with the normal microbial flora. However, due to its effect on the intestinal mucous membranes, it provides favourable conditions for the growth and development of normal microbial flora in an individual patient.

How does Enterosgel absorb ethanol from blood without being absorbed into blood?

Due to its hydrophobic properties, Enterosgel resides within the intestinal lumen without being absorbed into blood. Ethanol and its degradation products present in blood are constantly secreted into the intestinal lumen due to the mechanisms of entero-endogenous recirculation of substances. Within the intestinal lumen the drug performs the active capture of these substances and prevents their reabsorption, thus decreasing the ethanol content in blood. Beside, the administration of Enterosgel contributes to the reducing of systemic intoxication, which increases during alcohol overdosage, thus moderating the toxic load on the liver and other organs.

How Enterosgel can be useful in the treatment of viral hepatitis, not being absorbed into blood from the intestinal lumen?

The positive effect of the drug is due to several factors. First of all, it possesses an ability to bind to and remove from the body hepatitis viruses that enter the gastrointestinal tract. Secondly, Enterosgel reduces the toxic and metabolic load on the liver due to the fixation and elimination of toxic substances, toxic metabolites, xenobiotics and metabolic products of pharmaceutical drugs. Thus, it aids the functioning of hepatic cells during their exposure to the viral infection. The administration of Enterosgel in patients with viral hepatitis results in the decreased period of detoxication treatment and in some case in the rapid positive effect without infusion of solutions.

Allergic reactions represent an individual response to certain substances that are not always present in the food. How does the drug recognize the substances being allergens for an individual patient?

Enterosgel cannot recognize the substances being allergens for an individual patient. The main effect of this product is due to the regeneration of the mucosal membranes of the gastrointestinal tract. As a result of such regeneration of gastrointestinal mucosa, its immune defence restores, the secretory immunoglobulin A content normalizes, and endotoxic aggression decreases. These effects result in the decreased intensity of allergic clinical symptoms.

What is the period of blood cholesterol decrease in patients who use Enterosgel?

In patients with significant hypercholesterolemia, the duration of Enterosgel administration is 6 weeks. Within this period, blood cholesterol content reduced from 7 mmol/l to 5 mmol/l. Within the same period, the atherogenic index fell from 5.45 to 2.9.

Does Enterosgel is indicated in patients with giardiasis? How long is the treatment course?

Enterosgel cannot remove protozoa from the human body. However, any helminth invasion is accompanied with the intoxication symptoms. Thus, Enterosgel is widely and successfully used as a component of the treatment regimen in patients with giardiasis. It increases the effect of drugs commonly recommended to patients with this disease several times. Moreover, it reduces the toxic influence of the liver. The mean duration of the treatment course is 21 days.

In what stage of helminth invasion Enterosgel administration is indicated? What helminths does it affect?

Enterosgel may be used during any stage of the disease. It does not induce helminth removal from the body. However, its concomitant use with helminthocidal drugs improves the effect of anti-helminth treatment, because Enterosgel reduces intoxication symptoms characteristic for this condition.

How does Enterosgel affect the symptoms of cholestasis?

Enterosgel does not exert any influence on the bile ducts motility.

From what age Enterosgel may be administered? What is the duration of treatment? What doses are used?

Enterosgel may be used from the moment of birth. The doses and the duration of treatment depend on the age, stage of intoxication, severity of the patient´s condition and main disease. The mean therapeutic dose of Enterosgel in children at the age of 0 to 5 years is 1 teaspoon (5 g) tid, from 5 to 14 years – 1 dessert spoon (10 g) tid, in adults – 1 tablespoon (15 g) tid. The mean duration of treatment is 21 days. The minimal duration of treatment is 10 to 15 days, because within this period the regeneration of the predominant part of gastrointestinal mucosal membrane occurs. The product is not absorbed into blood and is completely eliminated from the body through natural ways, thus the overdosage is impossible.

Does Enterosgel use is permitted in pregnant women?

Yes. Enterosgel cannot be absorbed into blood, it is non-toxic and chemically inert. Thus, it may be used in any stage of pregnancy.

Does Enterosgel overdosage damage the health?

The product is not absorbed into blood and is completely eliminated from the body through natural ways within 7 to 8 hours, thus the overdosage is impossible.

What is the period between the repeated courses of treatment?

Enterosgel may be used within any time period, depending on the situation. However, in case of its preventive use, the courses of enterosorption are recommended twice per year: in the autumn and in the spring. The recommended duration of the treatment course is 21 days.

Are there any contraindications to Enterosgel administration?

Yes. Those are individual intolerance and intestinal atony.

Does Enterosgel possess any adverse effects? Can it induce diarrhoea?

Enterosgel administration may result in individual intolerance. Some patients have a tendency to constipation during the use of Enterosgel. To prevent constipation, Enterosgel administration should be accompanied with a large volume of water and with fermented milk drinks in the diet. Enterosgel does not induce diarrhoea.

Does the stool colour change during the treatment?

No. Enterosgel helps to normalize the stool. In rare cases constipation is observed.

Why does the drug have a starch flavour?

Enterosgel is a colourless gel-like paste without any taste and odour. If a patient feels any flavour, this is related to his/her own subjective perception exclusively.

Can Enterosgel be dissolved in tea or in fruit juices?

Enterosgel cannot be dissolved in fluids, but a suspension may be prepared through its dissolution in pure water. It may be dissolved in tea or in fruit juices as well.

The physician will usually prescribe parallel administration of eubiotics (Lactobacillus bifidus or other), Hylak forte etc. Once clinical remission is achieved, Enterosgel is taken in the morning and evening in a prophylactic dose. You must be undergoing chemo- or radiotherapy for your primary disease (prostate cancer). Such therapy is unavoidable with this diagnosis. Answer:	Enterosgel works selectively – it absorbs in particular toxic substances of middle molecular mass. Such molecules are usually accumulated in the body as a result of pathological processes. These molecules are produced by pathogenic microflora or are produced in the body as a result of metabolic disorders. Enterosgel absorbs mostly active toxic molecules – endotoxins which damage mucosa. Through this effect Enterosgel also protects gastrointestinal mucosa and enhances the production of immunoglobulin A (IgA). The major role of IgA is to neutralise antigens on the surface of mucosa together with the mucosa protective mechanisms (mucus, cilia of the cells, the movements – peristaltic activity of the bowels). IgA is resistant in respect of the effects of some enzymes, which means that it prevents the multiplication of pathogenic organisms in body secretions, helping to protect the surface of mucosa from the penetration of foreign molecules.
